Canada’s certifying body for medical radiation technologists turned textbook and PDF professional development courses into interactive, bilingual eLearning
Clinically sound content that couldn’t do more than a textbook could
The Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) develops self-directed distance education for continuing professional development across four disciplines. The courses were authored by subject matter experts and peer-reviewed, and members received them as PDFs and textbooks. Online, that meant the same hard-copy content on a screen.
The courses had two jobs: to sustain continuing competence in practice and improve how technologists work. A static document does neither well. The rebuild also had to run in both official languages, deliver through a SCORM-compliant LMS, and draw on content from several experts.
A ground-up rebuild that turned reading into practice
Interactivity built for clinical content
Click-to-reveal diagrams, drag and drop activities, flashcards, image sliders, knowledge checks, and case scenarios, with 50 to 100 layers per slide in Articulate Storyline.
Images that work together
Scan images, once scattered throughout a textbook, were grouped into sliders, and learners can switch between CT and CE scans of the same case to see what changes. CAMRT highlighted this.
A plan that held across experts and years
A clear project plan, individual onboarding for each expert, and shared templates kept every course consistent as new ones were added during a two to three-year build. The result is that it is easier for CAMRT to manage and update, and it kept delivery running through the pandemic.
See the professional development courses in action
CAMRT’s peer-reviewed content didn’t change. What changed is what a member can do with it: work through a case, compare two scans, get a wrong answer, and learn why. That is continuing competence in practice, and the program kept growing without a rebuild.
